“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of theses is charity.”
Paul doesn’t speak lightly when he lists faith, hope, and love. These three virtues are foundational to the Christian life. Together, they guide us, shape us, and sustain us in our journey with Christ. Faith is the trust we place in God, believing that He is who He says He is, and that He will do what He promises. Hope is the confident expectation of God’s promises. It’s not wishful thinking, but a steadfast trust that, even in the midst of trials, God’s future for us is secure and filled with His goodness. Love, the greatest of these, transforms everything. It’s the force that brings faith and hope to life. Without love, our faith would be meaningless, and our hope would lack depth.
Why does Paul say that charity is the greatest of faith and hope? Are they not as important? They are very important! But love reflects the character of God! It’s who He is! God is love (1 John 4:8). As believers, we are called to reflect His character in every aspect of our lives. Faith and hope are vital, but love is the ultimate expression of who God is and what He desires for us.
So, what does it look like to live out this “greatest” love in our daily lives? It starts with recognizing that love isn’t just a feeling we have toward others; it’s a decision and an action that flows from the heart of God. While faith and hope are essential to our walk with God, love will outlast them all. In the life to come, our faith will be made sight, and our hope will be fulfilled in the presence of Christ. But love—love will never fail. It will remain, because God’s love for us is eternal, and as His children, we are called to reflect that eternal love in all we do.
