“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)”
When life feels overwhelming, and we’re reminded of our imperfections, it’s easy to get caught up in the weight of our mistakes and struggles. But then, there’s this beautiful truth in these two verses that remind us of the astonishing love and mercy of God. It’s like a breath of fresh air when we’ve been holding our breath for too long. These verses point us to the incredible reality that, despite our sin and failures, God’s grace is greater than we can ever imagine.
God, in His rich mercy, doesn’t leave us where we are. He moves toward us in love, offering us the grace we don’t deserve. Where our sin was deep, His mercy is deeper still. Where our failures seem final, His love makes all things new. When we experience His mercy, we’re reminded that grace is a gift we can never repay. We don’t have to do anything to earn it. We simply receive it. And that’s something to celebrate.
We were dead in our sins. This isn’t just figurative language—it’s the reality of our separation from God before we came to know Christ. We were spiritually lifeless, incapable of changing our state or saving ourselves. We needed a Savior, and that Savior is Jesus. We cannot save ourselves. No amount of good deeds, striving, or self-effort can make us right with God. It’s only by His grace that we are saved. And this truth should cause us to pause and reflect in awe. Salvation isn’t something we earn—it’s something we receive. And that changes everything.
