“And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Pray in secret. Such an important message! As a child of God, we are to be clothed in humility. By praying in secret, praying in private, we are coming before the Father in honesty. We can pray honestly in public too, but even we must admit that at times, we tend to make ourselves sound “more spiritual” when we pray in public. This isn’t always the case, but Jesus gave us that warning for a reason. Praying loudly or to get more attention is empty and there is no fruitful reward from it.

God sees our hearts and he knows what intentions we have when we pray. Let us strive to come before the Lord in humility and with a pure heart every time we pray! To lift up our brothers and sisters in Christ and their needs in prayer with a sweet spirit rather than lift up ourselves with a haughty spirit. We should have the desire to pray with pure intentions without thinking, “Do I sound spiritual?”. We don’t have to sound spiritual when we pray.

Prayer is a conversation and a time to bring requests before him. It shouldn’t be a competition of who sounds better. Pray in secret. Pray with humility.
