“And at midnight Paul and Si’-las prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed.”
Praying and singing while sitting in prison. Paul and Silas sure didn’t let their circumstances define their attitudes or their outlook on a less than desirable situation! They continued to praise and worship the Lord despite being imprisoned for simply sharing the gospel and obeying the Lord’s commands. They weren’t worried about whether or not they would be released. They knew that no matter what happened, they had obeyed God and they would be united with him in heaven in the end! And so they never ceased to pray and give him the glory and praise for what he had done!
Their testimony and obedience led many to Christ. Just think how many of those men that had been in the prison that night were greatly impacted by their worshipping even in prison! Because of their testimony and singing praises even in prison, many more men heard their songs and got to experience the greatness of God as he allowed their shackles to fall and the doors to open! But did they leave, no!
Though Paul and Silas had done nothing worthy of being thrown in prison, they weren’t going to run away. They knew that no matter the outcome of their situation, God was in control and they had nothing to fear!
How many of us can honestly say that we would have stayed in that prison? Would we have continued to praise God if we were in their place? Though we may not be in jail or face persecution like they had, we still face daily battles and struggles. Are our hearts in the position to continue praising God when the circumstances may not be what we would like? Are we surrendered to his will and willing to follow him even when the world would say we have every right to be mad?
Allow God to have first place and don’t forget to praise him even when placed in a difficult or ugly situation! God can do mighty things when we glorify him even in the hard times!
