“For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord us against them that do evil.”
As a daughter of Christ, we should seek peace and have a calm spirit. To be one who loves life and enjoys even the simplest of days, we should desire to hold our tongues even when something negative comes along. Someone is harsh or criticizing at the store? We can simply smile and pray for peace in their life. The kids are arguing and fighting? A calm attitude and approach will de-escalate the situation faster than anger. ‘A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.’ (Proverbs 15:1)
If we are living in the spirit, responding with our flesh will be satisfying for only a moment and it will only escalate the situation. Why should we act like the world if we are to be separate from it? When Jesus was treated harshly, he never spoke out of turn or let something evil, unkind, or untoward come out of his mouth. As we follow his footsteps, we should strive to do the same. To speak softly and kindly, to rebuke without allowing our tongues to be harmful.
Our God is a righteous God and doesn’t stand for evil and harmful actions. He doesn’t look at our unkind words with approval. Neither should we. If we are acting unrighteously, why should our righteous God desire to be open to us and hear our prayers, if we choose to allow our flesh a fleeting satisfaction in a temporary moment when we could be calm, peaceful, and magnify him through godly actions? We are a reflection of Christ and our testimony should show that. Not that we choose to be a testimony when it benefits us in some way.
Are our words peaceful? Do we eschew evil?
