“Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD. Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgement: and the meek will he teach his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.”
We see David’s heartfelt prayer expressing both a plea for God’s guidance and an acknowledgment of His faithfulness. A plea for forgiveness, one that speaks to the weight of past mistakes and the desire to be set free from them. David acknowledges that God’s goodness is the reason for His mercy. It’s not based on our worthiness but on God’s love and compassion.
God seeks to teach his children. To show us how to best set an example and walk in his truth. When we allow him access to our hearts and lives, he guides and teaches us in the way we should walk. His holy way. When we humble ourselves and let him have control, we are better able to listen and learn what he has to say. The meek recognize their dependence on God and are open to His direction. It is these individuals whom God will guide in His ways, teaching them to walk in righteousness.
He is merciful to us and gives grace when we don’t always keep his commandments or bear a good testimony for him. The paths he sets for us lead to growth and more opportunities to set him first and serve him. He knows what’s best for us and sees the bigger picture. He does not lead us on paths of confusion or deceit but rather on a path where His grace and faithfulness are evident at every turn.
